Urban Struggles and The Right to the City

1st Workshop

IBF, Uppsala (Sweden) 17-18 December, 2019

Focusing on different geographical, economic and social realities, the Swedish and Brazilian researchers participating in this project agree on the rapid proliferation of urban development processes, which have transformed European and Latin American cities into primary sites for the implementation of a neoliberal agenda. Although the European and Latin American urban contexts present distinct trajectories of formation and consolidation as well as of transformation from neoliberalism, points of convergence can be found between strategies of contestation and collective organization. This project has contributed to study these urban movements (such as housing activism and grassroots coalitions on urban heritage) from an intercontinental perspective, allowing for a systematic comparison of the movements’ characteristics, structures, praxis and outcomes.
